The DVLA stipulates certain restrictions for custom reg numbers that require each plate to comply with specific rules related to letter and number formatting, plate dimensions, font styles and spacing, and material requirements.

You can transfer your custom number plate to a different Volkswagen, provided you follow the correct procedures and meet the necessary requirements set by the DVLA. The process is relatively simple, but there are a few important steps and considerations to ensure that the transfer is successful. These include:

1. You must own both vehicles when attempting to transfer a VW number plate.
2. The vehicle receiving the new plate must be roadworthy.
3. You must complete a V317 form.
4. You must check if the new vehicle is eligible to receive the old plate in terms of age and model if the custom plate has a year identifier on it.

Please note: a fee of £80 will usually be incurred for this process.

You may be able to transfer your VW number plate to another vehicle, but be aware when designing your plate that if you include identification marks for the registration year, for example ‘13’ for 2013, and the new vehicle was not registered in the same year, then you will not be able to transfer your new plate over.
